If you are a fan of multi-tasking, or if you label yourself as a multi-tasker, then this piece of writing might upset you. Yes, there are moments when the need for multi-tasking is paramount. But when things really matter, just like in business, you might want to concentrate on one task at a time.

Definitions first. Multi-tasking is defined as juggling two or more tasks at the same time in an attempt to finish as many tasks as you can in the least amount of time. Simply put, it is man’s ability to perform more than one activity at the same time.

A classic example involves writing an e-mail, answering a phone call, sipping your coffee, and “mouth-signaling” your incoming visitor to stay on the couch while you finish the call. That’s four tasks all at once. Amazing, right?

Multi-tasking is okay, if the activities that you are taking care of are fairly simple and somewhat routine in nature. In technical terms, this is called “continuous partial attention” where one does a number of things at a time and that these tasks are not studied in depth. And this is rarely the case for a top earning marketers.

A successful entrepreneur needs concentration. For example, dealing with customers, especially face-to-face, requires your full attention. After all, people would not like it if you are taking to them while you are browsing your phone or checking your email.

The Switching Cost – the Cost of Switching from One Task to Another

Experimental psychologists have long been studying the effect of multi-tasking on productivity. Numerous studies have shown that there is a “switching cost” every time you change from one task to another. This means that you need as much as four minutes to go back to maximum productivity on a task after an interruption. Now, if you’re trying to juggle four tasks, you lose as much as sixteen minutes in one cycle of task-switching alone. Such a waste of time, huh?

Given such a piece of information, would you still opt to multi-task? True, a successful entrepreneur like you has a lot of things on your plate. You sometimes wish you have more than 24 hours in a day.

What any serious entrepreneur should do, however, is finish one task at a time. On the average, you may have the same result as compared to doing portions of each task. The benefit comes from the non-quantifiable things that you get out of completing tasks one at a time. You get less stressed simply because you’ll have one frame of thought at a time. As a result, as you shred off tasks one by one, you have less and less things to think about. And this, perhaps, is the secret of success for any successful entrepreneur!

A few years back in the island of Tahiti, where the palm tress sway and the ocean caresses the sand, I had the blessing of speaking with a wise man. He told me that one of the most important things you can do in life is to control yourself. You see, each human body has a spirit. It’s this spirit which enables us to be eternal beings.

Wise council: Your Spirit needs to control Your Flesh and not the other way around.

Why is this important information in order to become a successful entrepreneur? Well, our flesh loves to delight in things which will lead us away from success. Your Spirit on the other hand, has desires at another level above the Flesh. For example, your Spirit will know its a sacrifice to get up early – but You Do It. Its a sacrifice to open a book to improve your mindset – but You Do It.

While reading “Think and grow Rich”, it hit home that most entrepreneurs work on their computers for their online business. What are the distractions that the Internet presents itself onto the busy entrepreneur? Well, many things – but Napoleon Hill mentions – SEX.

That’s right, the flesh is weak and will sacrifice success for a quick self indulgent fun or curiosity. Note this important aspect: The Spirit, if controlling the flesh, will master the urges and set aside the distractions. Easy? No way! But that’s the power of mastering self. Mastering the Flesh is no easy task.

Drive

To become an entrepreneur you need a very strong drive. Forget about higher education and degrees because quite frankly, they are not all they’re cracked up to be. Dedication is a must-have for any entrepreneur. Owning your own company or selling your own products or whatever you may have in mind can be very lucrative for you. However, there can be times when it seems as if you’re just spinning your wheels. At these times, you have to pull strongly on your qualities and dedication is one of the most important ones. You have to be dedicated to being successful with any endeavor that you take on. Assuming that you truly believe in your product or service, being dedicated is quite important. George Orwell, a very famous and beloved author, was rejected numerous times before becoming a published author, as were many others. Now, he is quoted, loved and taught to literature students!

A Keen Sense of the Evolving

This is a big one. No matter what industry you are thinking of entering or are currently in, things change rapidly. As an entrepreneur, it is very important to stay up to date with what’s happening in your industry. This leads to a sort of sixth sense which includes being able to anticipate changes, differences and more. If you are able to stay up to date in your industry, not only will you be more successful, but you can be the first to offer this or the first to make that. This is a question that has no absolute answer. In many aspects of life an entrepreneurial spirit is useful. For our purposes, we will stick to the commercial and business areas and narrow the field of possible answers within this scope.

I believe that theoretically any person can be a successful entrepreneur. Unfortunately, this is far from true in the real world. Yet, they have a unique ability to keep pushing their project along, always seeing the glass is half or more full and a way will be found.

If success were easily achieved we would enjoy a whole lot more of it. I am always struck by how negative so many people are in every aspect of their lives. I have never seen a successful entrepreneur have a negative personality. It is an instant eliminator for anyone seeking to launch an entrepreneurial career.

So, we can be confident that successful entrepreneur’s are a different breed. The do not fear failure. The belief they possess in themselves, their opportunity and the benefits they will achieve from successfully launching their product is palpable. It drives them to overcome obstacles and find answers when none seem plausible. Anyone can attempt to become an entrepreneur. However, the evidence is powerful that success requires a unique set of personal attributes not possessed by most people.

Because of his massive success to bring an affordable car to the American public, he then inspired the building of the highways. Which in turn inspired someone to create a stop sign and then came the stop Light.
